Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn Client Overview

The UO:KR client came out in 2007. It was loaded with bugs and performance issues that caused a large number of players to steer clear of using it. A number of patches were released such that by mid-Feb 2008 the client was in pretty good shape and offered a bunch of useful features to players. The Syndicate used the following articles internally to help train our members on the new client and this page is a compilation of them all made available to all players.

The Crafting System
There are many great features in Kingdom Reborn. One of the greatest atm is crafting. Beware though, with all the features this client has for crafting it can easily become addictive.

The crafting menus are greatly improved, especially for us that love the Heartwood quest. I am using the footstool quest as the example. Prior to Kingdom Reborn, you would get the quest, select footstool, and click the make now button 10 times. Then you would select the menu from yourself and toggle as quest item, clicking each footstool. Followed by the escape key to get rid of the target. Now you are ready to click the quest giver and collect your reward.

In Kingdom Reborn all in all crafting menus you have the ability to select the amount of the item to make. With a simple click in a box you can also have them automatically be marked as a quest item. The same quest when done in KR is much more efficient and can be completed in 3 clicks.

In this screen shot it shows the crafting menu on the left side. The mining macro is on the right. I'll talk about that shortly.

All the crafting menus in this client are very easy to use and very efficient. You can leave the toggle as quest item selected, if you don't have a quest it doesn't mark items. With the ability to select the number of items to make it is also great for working bods.

The macro, Target by Resource is amazing. Which is pictured on the right side of the screen shot. It's simple to set up, select main menu, macros, create. The left box when you click on it opens a group of pictures (adding the picture is optional in creating macros). You will need 10 shovels or picks for this macro. The box on the right is for the action. For mining we select target by resource for the action. Each time you drop a target by resource action in the box to the right it will open another box above, thats where your shovel/pick goes. As you can see from the picture you can chain actions, I use 10 of the target by resource, dropping a different shovel in each. Now you name the macro and select ok. At this point you can either drop it on the hotbar (the macro), or can right click it on the macros list and select assign hot key. Now your ready to go mining, you simply hit you macro key and walk around. It's very fast. When your shovels run out of uses r! eturn to macros, right click and select edit. You repeat the right click edit on each target by resource action with adding fresh shovels.

The lumber jacking is done with the same macro, but you use the target by resource once. In the box that opens you drop an axe/hatchet. This one you need to select repeat and take the slider to 10. Less if you can't carry that many logs.

I do set up a dress macro for all of my chars. Aye my smith can get dead to ;p. On the mules when you set up this macro it's best not to add the talisman. Do to while your crafting/creating if you hit the macro key your talisman will be changed.

With Kingdom Reborn and crafting you can't go wrong. The client is truly a dream come true.

The Mapping/Waypoint System
The Map has a ton of options. The map and the auto dress macro have made death a pleasure. When you go into the options not only will you get to decide what you will see, but you will also be able to select where you will see it and how.

The column on the left is for selecting things to show in the full map. Center column is the little radar map. The last column is in game. The drop down menu allows you to select how you will see it. :) When I die in KR I get a really nice pulse of light in game showing me where my corpse is. The radar map will clearly point me in the direction of healers. Also my radar map shows me where my party members are, making it much harder for you all to lose me ;p .

You can also set Waypoints using the KR map. To do this you go into the main large map and right click, select create Waypoint. In this box you can select the Facet. Select type will allow you to assign it to Custom 1-10. The Coordinates will show automatically. But if you are looking for an SoS etc. you can backspace and add your own. The little dot on the left of the coordinates (2) allow you to choose between having coordinates entered as Lat & Long or as XYZ. When you click on the Waypoint icon (3) you will get a screen full of nice icons you can assign your waypoint.

On the very top of the main map window you have - Facet + with arrows on both sides. The arrows will change the facet the map is showing. - is to zoom out with + being to zoom in. The check mark at the top right corner closes the map. The larger circle on the main map left of the Waypoints (1) changes the map to radar. They have done a really great job with the map in Kingdom Reborn, not only does it offer many options but it's also very functional.

Here is one final little "Mapping" tip for all you Lumberjacks: When you find that tree that is dropping colored wood you can create a waypoint for it in the map system, and select to have it show the waypoint in game. This gives you a target you won't miss and a tree you won't lose.

The Main Menu
This is where you will be able to set macros, make performance tweaks, or just take advantage of some cool options.

In the Main Menu, User Settings, Graphics tab is where we will start. The Flexible Desktop allows you to have the black area around the play window. If you are having performance issues you would want to use full screen.

Use Legacy Art and Use Legacy Container I believe will make the graphics as close to 2d as possible. My preference is to use Legacy Art at this time but I don't care for the Legacy Container Art. Would guess that the legacy options would help with performance.

One of the newest options we got was the Show Foliage. The ability to not see foliage is very helpful, especially in Fel.

The Particle Detail adjusts the graphics of spells. When it is set to high you will see a great light show. Set to low will be less of the show part but will help if you have performance issues.

Turning "No Idle Animation" on will also help if you suffer performance issues as will Adjust the caches. As far as using the "Adjust the caches" it would be your preferences. Also you have the option to show or not show shadows, turning off Shadows would help in performance, if needed.

In the Main Menu, User Settings, Bindings Tab you will see a list of preset bindings. You do not have to keep these, to erase a binding you left click the binding, it will highlight yellow. Then simply hit the escape key to remove the binding, or any other key to change the binding.

Towards the bottom you have Scroll Wheel Behavior which allows you to use your scroll wheel for either zoom (which is preset), target friendly, or target hostile. Mine is set for target Hostile and its really great :).

The Reload Interface is also one of the nicer Bindings. Helps alot if you move something half way off screen. You can hit Left Ctrl+R and get it back.

The UOKR default sets bindings to one key. The Legacy Default will set the bindings to two key, example the Character Window binding using KR default is C, while legacy default is Left Alt+P.

The Main Menu, User Settings, Sound is all pretty simple. One of my happiest days in KR was when they gave us the option to get rid of those awful footsteps.

Now we are off to the Main Menu, User Settings, Options. Setting Show Names to None, is said to help in performance. As is having the Circle of Transparency turned off.

The "Always Show Health, Mana, and Stamina" is another really nice feature. When this is selected it shows the amounts of the stats in numbers along with the colored bars.

The Main Menu, User Settings, Interface tab is the place where you are able to take advantage of a custom UI among other things. I am not going into that part today. But what it is is the ability to change the UI, most of the ones I have seen made are themed.

Enable UI Scale will allow you to make everything smaller except the play window. The size of everything else you see can be adjusted with this option.

If you select to use Legacy Chat mode it will make the chat as it is in 2d. I really enjoy using the Kingdom Reborn chat system, allows many more macro options.

To use Kingdom Reborn chat you hit enter to open it, then type and hit enter again. To change between the different chat modes you hit enter and type /s for Say (normal chat), /p for Party, and /g for Guild. Then hit enter again. The type of chat you have selected stays how it's set until you change it.

Macros, Hotbars & More
Macros:

In Main Menu is where Macros can be created. They are pretty easy to set up. Simply select create. The left box is if you would like to assign a picture to your Macro. If you click the left side box you will get a box with the pictures you can use. The right box is for the action. In the action box you can drop skills, spells, virtues, or any actions from the action menu.

If your action uses targeting, you simply right click it once it's placed in the macro to bring up the targeting menu.

Name you macro, if you like. And select repeating if required. Then select OK.

Once the macro is created to will be stored in Macros, at any time you can edit it by right clicking. This is also how you assign a hotkey (binding) for the macro. Remember any binding can be erased by selecting assign hotkey from the menu then hitting the escape key. To assign your hotkey you simply press the key you want to use for the macro.

One of my favorite macros is the equip items (auto dress). Also know that for anyone that changes weapons during battle you can just set an equip items macro for each weapon. In KR there is no need to unequip weapons before equipping the new one.

You also have the Actions menu added separate in the Main Menu. Which you can pull up at anytime and drop an action directly onto the hotbar without having to set up a macro.

In the screen shot above you see Macros, hitting the Create button opens the boxes to the right, edit macros and Actions.

Hotbars:

You also see (screen shot) a newly created hotbar. By clicking on the / at the end of the hotbar and dragging it down you can change hotbars from horizontal to vertical positions. In the same way you can also change the length of the hotbar.

By right clicking on any square you can assign a hot key, choose targeting, remove the item (clear), create a new hotbar, or destroy a created hotbar. As a side note to create a new hotbar use the option from the last hotbar created. While other hotbars have the option to create new when I did this the last hotbar I created was the one that gave me the new hotbar.

The main hotbar has key bindings already preset, to remove these right click, select assign hotkey, then hit the escape key.

You can drop anything into the hotbar and anything you drop can be made into a Macro by assigning it a hotkey. Another real cool feature it the bandages, when dropped into the hotbar not only does it keep a count of how many you have, it also has an awesome count down timer when the aid is applied. Really great for and template that uses bandages. Also know that if you drop any other items that stack the hotbar will keep count.

Both the hotbar and the marcos in Kingdom Reborn have limitless possibilities.

The main hotbar in Kingdom Reborn has a 1 to the right of it, it allows you to to use more hotbars without creating new ones. For this you would use the number to the right and select 1-9 to select the hotbar you want to use.

Play window and Chat:

While using the Flexible Desktop option to get the black area around the play window you also are able to resize the play window. The bottom right corner has / that you can click and drag to achieve any size you desire.

By right clicking the Chat of the chat window you will get a menu of all the options. For example if you don't want to see the system messages in the main chat you would right click Chat, select new tab. By right clicking the new tab you can select system from the menu and all system messages will be shown in the new tab instead of the main chat window.

The chat window also can be resized (bottom right corner). It can also be locked to a position by selecting that option from the chat menu.

If you are doing something that gets alot of system messages, mining for an example, it is a good idea to create a new tab and place the System Messages there, keeping them under the main Chat. They are causing a lag/skip at this time.

Odds & Ends

(refer to the picture below to help illustrate each of these sections)

The Backpack:
To open it you just click on the backpack icon on the bottom right of your screen. Once opened different can choose between 3 different views, they are grid (as shown in the picture), List, and Freeform. To change the views click on the small circle at the right of the picture of the backpack in the open backpack graphic.

The Character Sheet:
The Character Sheet is really awesome. To get to it you click the character sheet icon and select the lower left icon. This shows everything about the char your on. The bottom area "Resistances" has arrows on either side, by clicking the arrow you change the menus. At a glance you will see the resist, attack, magic, and defense. It's a great way to get a toon equipped.

Party Bars:
As you can see I have Fidelis Eagle in party. Party bars automatically open up on the left side of the screen. No need to ever pull a party members tag. You can drag them anywhere you like. If you don't want to see the party bars you can select the white circle to the right with the arrow in it. This will close the bars only. In Kingdom Reborn your char never shows up in the party, as far as being on the list with other members. Your main bar always shows, as seen above the party. Just as in 2d you can still pull bars. Often I will pull my own bar, it's more familiar for me. And on your char main bar you can't target it if you are using target cursor.

Party bars in KR do not stack on top of each other or bounce around the screen as they do in 2d whenever party status changes. Which is truly a dream come true. Another difference between clients is while the number of bars you can pull is the same (20) in 2d it will allow you to continue to pull bars by dropping one that was already pulled. KR only allows the 20, if you try to pull 21 it simply will not give you the tag. It's another great feature.

Pet Bars:
The pet bar is on the left side of you screen, it shows as the small white circle with the arrow inside. You can move the circle or bar anywhere you like. Click the circle and the pet bar opens. This is the main pet bar. You can do anything with the main bar, from renaming to right clicking for commands. I do prefer to pull the pets tag when out fighting due to it being easy to try to heal and hit the name, causing it to wait to be renamed.

Another cool feature on the pet bar is that if you are using summons that can be healed, earth elementals for an example, they automatically are on the pet bar. No need to pull tags.

Friends List:
Don't even mess with this, while the concept is good it is not working at this time. What it will be is an in game instant messenger from what I can tell. The main issues I have with it (other than it not working) is it's the acct that is added, not char specific. There is no way to know if someone added you, no accept or deny option. And you can't remove people from your list if they aren't showing as online. As of March 6th, it's best not to play with it imo.

Interaction:
The shift+right click allows you to shop or get to your menu (insurance, toggle quest item), etc.

The single left click closes opened menus, backpack, etc.

The single right click pretty much does everything else, including looting. Another really awesome feature.

The escape key will bring up the main menu, or clear a target.

The greatest thing that Ultima Online offers are our choices/options. With the Kingdom Reborn client they have added many more. From the way we want to see our inventory to customizing the UI. It's really amazing with the possibilities being endless.

Tips & Tricks

There are a number of interested or advanced things that you can do with KR. Here are a few of the ones we found useful and wanted to highlight:

Creating A Recall Macro:
1) Click Macro
2) Click Recall (target current)
3) Wait for Target
3) Cursor target last
You will be teleported to the last place you recalled to.

Lumberjacking:
1) Use the "target resource" macro for the set up and tell KR to have it repeat. That gives you 10 quickchops per tree before pushing the macro again.

2) When you find a colored wood tree you can open the map, either full or radar. Right click where it shows your at and create a waypoint for that tree. For example if it was Yew you can name the waypoint Yew and assign it to custom 1-10. Assign what icon you prefer by clicking on the icon it shows. And click create. Now you won't lose the tree you found. Make sure you go into map options and have the location show in game, by putting a check in the in-game box. It's really awesome having it show in game, you can't miss it.

Mining:
The macro to mine multiple times rapidly is similar to lumberjacking. You set it up the same way however it will chain 8-10 swings without another keypress due to shovels and picks having charges. To reload the macro when your shovels are used up you edit the macro, then once in (macro), you edit the target by resource. Which will open a new box where you can drop another shovel. You right click to get the menu, left click to select edit.

Show Names Of Items On Ground:
The Ctrl+Shift in KR is simular to the ctrl+shift in 2d. The tags are larger and you have to close them by using the X. You can still work from them, loot, lockpick, etc. But the tag has to be on top, meaning you will need to close tags that cover it. Also know that you cannot walk and hold the ctrl+shift, it stops you. It's pretty easy to get used. The Object Handle filter in the Main Menu under Options allows you to select how many tags will display when you use ctrl+shift.

Copy Template To Other Chars:
If you get a char set up the way you like you can copy the set up to other chars. To do this you go to My Documents\EA Games\Ultima Online\[account name]\[shard name] . Once there you will find your files for every char that you have logged in with. Then just copy the one you want. Paste the file and rename it to the char your copying to. Making sure you delete the file your replacing (which will be there only if that char has logged into KR). If you have any abnormal thing happen with the char that received the copied set up you can log out and back in which should fix it.

Two Macros To Make Cloth:
You need 2 different macros to create cloth. The loom is an easy one ;p the spinning wheel needs work.

The one for the spinning wheel:
1) Create Macro
2)Last Object (target current), click spinning wheel before use to have it as current
3)Delay (mine is set for 5.4 you can adjust as needed)
4)Enable repeating 10 times

The Loom:
Last Object (target current)
Enable repeating 10 times

Using A Custom UI

To install them you use the instructions they come with. If they don't have instructions it means that it's a complete mod. You will extract the UI to C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online Kingdom Reborn\UserInterface folder.

Once installed you log into KR, the first screen with name and pass on the top left says Custom UI, you can select the UI from the list there. Or in game in Main Menu, User Settings, Interface, "use custom ui".

There is no real way of knowing if the UI you download is safe, so it's always best to scan it for viruses prior to the install. Also know that if the UI your downloading says it requires another program download to run then you should never download it. No custom UI will require a second program to run it. Those are just safety warnings I haven't had any issues.

If your interested in making your own custom ui THIS LINK from Stratics may help

One of the more popular UI mods is known as Bitter Black. For all of us that have downloaded and are running the Bitter Black UI there was a cool update written. The update will create commas in prices. The instructions that were posted for how to modify that UI are: Bitter Black 2.0 Manual Patch walkthrough... (by Dermott of LS)

Gonna do this as a walkthrough because we're adding one small, yet CRUCIAL feature into the BB 2.0 UI.

Go to the BB 2.0 folder you are using and go into the Source folder.

Find ItemProperties.LUA and open it in Notebook.

Inside this file, scroll down until you see the following: -- THOUSANDS SEPARATOR

Now, Create a space between

-- <<< CHECK >>>
.
.
.
end

and

-- <<< WEIGHT >>>

within that space place the following:
Code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- <<< PRICE >>>
text = string.find(WStringToString(labelText[numLabels]) , "Price:")
if ( text ~= nil) then
local num = wstring.sub(labelText[numLabels], 7)
labelText[numLabels] = L"Price: " .. WindowUtils.AddCommasToNumber(num)
labelColors[numLabels] = ItemProperties.ENGRAVE_COLOR
end

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Save the file and restart KR. This adds in a comma separator to the Price field on player run vendors that Pinco missed. Instead of trying to re-upload everything, I decided this is such a quick change it should be easy for people to handle on their own.

Fishing In UO:KR

First the macro

1) In you Main Menu select Macros, then Create.
2) The left side box is for the picture (optional), to assign a picture click the box. The fishing picture is towards the bottom.
3) The action box is the box on the right.
4) In the first action box drop your fishing pole.
5) The next action box is Delay (6.0), the 6.0 is what works for me you may need to adjust it.
6) Next action box is Last Object (target cursor), right click the Last Object action for target options.
7) The final action box is Cursor Target Last.
8) Enable Repeating (10 times)
9) Then name your macro and select OK.
10) From the macros list you right click and select assign hotkey or you can just drag the macro to a spot on a hotbar and use it from there.

In the screen shot the top right is the picture of the fishing macro.

The commands for steering the boat are all in the actions menu. You can either create macros, or drag them to the hotbar. In the picture I created 5 new hotbars and just resized them. If you choose to use them from a hotbar you can always assign it a hotkey by right clicking for the menu.

The macro will stop if you fight a sea serpent. When you go to re start the macro make sure you hit the escape key if you have the serpents tag up.

Treasure Map Hunting

Treasure Hunting has changed a great deal between 2D and Kingdom Reborn. Many advantages and challenges have been added to the profession with the birth of Kingdom Reborn. One advantage is being able to use the grid view and being able at a glance to see all the items the chest contains.

One of the challenges is simply the decoding of the map. As you can see from the picture below. Both pictures are of the same tmap. The one on the left is what we are all used to seeing, it's our 2d version. The one on the right is the map in Kingdom Reborn.

I can say that after decoding and digging up many treasure's in Kingdom Reborn that the challenge of decoding the maps disappears. That being said, the sheer volume of information to share about Treasure Maps necessitates having them on their own page of the guide. Below you will find a link to our page where we walk you through the changes, as well as setting Waypoints on your in game map to help you find the Treasure Maps. We supply images that correspond to those waypoints that you can use to help you locate where your map is. Most shards, by now, have Treasure Map Rune libraries you can use to help you get there faster. The same 2D runes work in KR. The advantage is, with KR waypoints, when you recall in you will see a glowing spot on the ground to let you know you are in the right place.
